Hi – I’m Jo Bates and I know from experience that starting a business is more than a strategic endeavor—it’s an energetic one. It’s tiring & peppered with challenges that take you out of your comfort zone; it can be frustrating at the start – and don’t let anyone tell you any different. I know I wouldn’t have struggled as much early on if I’d prepared in the ways I detail here – by establishing a self-care system that will support you when the going gets tough. That’s why I’m sharing this with you now. Many women try to launch from a place of overwhelm or depletion because well, life is already busy…but your greatest asset in entrepreneurship is not only what you know, it’s who you are from the inside out – & that energy must be protected on a daily basis.

Step 1 – Cultivate Stillness: Silent Practice

What it is: Beginning each day with 10–20 minutes of silent meditation. No agendas, no screens—just connection with deeper breathing.

Why it matters: This is time JUST FOR YOU. Apart from numerous health benefits such as calming your nervous system, for example, stillness taps into the quantum field—the realm of infinite possibility. It trains your mind to observe instead of react, and deepens your trust in your own intuition.

How to do it:

Find a comfortable environment – like a favourite chair, yoga mat or your garden, if it’s quiet.

Set a timer (start with 10 minutes).

Sit comfortably; observe the breath.

If thoughts arise, gently release them.

Optional mantra: “I am here, I allow

TIP: If you struggle with letting thoughts go, think of them as ‘butterfly’ thoughts or envisage the words on a passing cloud. Breathe slowly and intentionally – in through the nose and out through the mouth.

Did You Know? …if you quickly want to de-stress, HUM TO YOURSELF (you may want to do this alone -) Humming activates your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) which reduces stress and promotes relaxation. The gentle vibrations also increase nitric oxide production in the nasal passages, which is linked to improved blood flow, immune function & respiratory health. Who knew, right?


Step 2 – Practice Mindfulness: Choose Where To Put Your Energy

Why mindfulness matters:

Where you place your attention is where you place your energy.” Wasted thoughts about past failures or future fears deplete your creative fuel. (Dr. Joe) Fostering a daily gratitude routine helps your feelings of abundance in the moment – an important element of visualisation.

Practical tools you can use:

  • Mindful morning ritual: Savour your tea or movement with full presence.
  • One-minute check-ins: Pause mid-day; breathe, and tune into your body.
  • Emotional naming: Acknowledge any feelings (e.g. “I feel anxious”) and breathe through them.

Step 3 – Move the Energy: Yoga & Somatic Flow

Why move: Emotion = energy in motion. Movement practices release stale emotions—grief, fear, tension—and open your nervous system to clarity and creation.

Suggested practices:

  • 15–30 minute daily yoga (yin, Kundalini or slow flow).
  • Breathwork routines like box breathing or alternate nostril breath.
  • Freeform intuitive movement to release stuck energy. This can be so much fun!

Step 4 – Create Your Future with Meditation & Visualization

The science: There is hard evidence that mentally rehearsing your future self installs new neurological wiring – and when you begin acting from that version of yourself, not chasing it, things can start to happen quickly…and you’ll feel the shift. This is what top athletes do all the time – rehearse the race and imagine themselves winning.

  2. Feel the emotions: joy, freedom, impact.

Step 5 – Prioritize Rest & Nervous System Repair

Why rest is non-negotiable:

If your nervous system is in survival mode, your capacity to create and innovate shuts down. Your inner work—like nervous system preparation, resilience-building, and energy alignment—is what keeps women grounded through the inevitable uncertainty of entrepreneurship. Most businesses don’t fail because of bad ideas. They fail because the people – (or person most of the time) burn out, give up, or run out of capacity to sustain momentum. So many new entrepreneurs underestimate how important it is to take care of their own wellbeing – even before they start their business. The US business failure rate makes for depressing reading…

How to avoid this is by building a simple system of ‘self-care’ into your working day. Here’s what you can do…

Your toolkit:

  • Establish daily rituals such as journaling & gratitude.
  • Set clear boundaries for work and downtime.
  • Use self-soothing techniques—humming, gentle touch, breathing.

Step 6 – Let Go of Old Identities

What to release:

Let go of limiting roles—people-pleaser, doubter, martyr—that aren’t aligned with your new vision. I had to do this bigtime when I stopped thinking of myself as a ‘cancer sufferer’ and changed it up to “I am a cancer survivor”. I don’t say it’s easy to begin with…but keep at it, make it a consistent part of your new becoming and truly amazing things can happen. I’m living proof of it 🙂

Be honest and replace any negative thoughts you have about yourself with positive, empowering ones – quietly & consistently. Some women like to write them out & put them in plain sight…

  1. Who do I want to become?
  2. Who have I believed I needed to be to feel safe?
  3. What identity am I shedding as I launch this business?

If you’re comfortable with your silent practice, you can start to ask these simple questions that will align with who you want to become and help you to embody your authentic values & purpose.

Celebration: Acknowledge release of these old ideas about yourself as transformation, not loss. Feel good about your progress because by losing these ‘untrue’ beliefs, you’re making space for the new you – the successful entrepreneur.


Step 7 – Anchor in Purpose with Heart Coherence

What heart coherence feels like: Alignment between your mind’s intention and your heart’s resonance creates a kind of magic; an energy field that magnetises clarity, support & new ideas.

Practice

  • Place hands on your heart.
  • Breathe gently into the center.
  • Recall a memory or feeling of love/gratitude.
  • Ask: What would love have me do today?
